We all have them: headaches. They come and go, some last a few minutes, some last the whole day. Headaches can have many reasons, so if you have them frequently, or you experience sudden headaches, please consult a doctor. This article is more about the annoying occasional pain. We want to give you some ideas what to do against headaches when you are at home, in the office or on vacation.
What are causes for headaches?
Before you know what to do against headaches I want to tell you a bit about the most common reasons for headaches. What is quite interesting is that they don’t come from your brain (you cannot really feel in pain in your brain), and if it is not a serious underlying illness like a tumor or migraine, they don’t even come from your head. Yet, that’s the part of your body that will hurt the most, hence the name headaches.
We come soon to the part what to do against headaches, lets have a look at the causes first.
When we drink not enough, salt in our body starts to increase what effects the cells abd blood circulation.
Tension in our muscles
Many headaches come from tension in our neck and shoulder muscles. That happens a lot when we sit on a desk the whole day staring at our computer screen. It also affects people who do a repetitive work. Stress at work can also be a reason, why your body gets tense.
Of course, we get a headache after a night out with a bit too many drinks. The drinks can be one reason for the headaches, in particular sweet drinks and wine with lots of sulfur. But the main problem is that alcohol dehydrates our body. So drinking water during a part is one way what to do against headaches.
Many women complain about headaches during their period. One reason could be a change in the hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone. Some of those headaches are like migraine.
Workouts and sports
After a long run or a decent workout we sometimes feel pain in our head. There a two commonc causes: One is dehydration, the other is muscle tension. When we run, we keep our head for a long time in the same position, the same happens when cycling or swimming.
What to do against headaches
So, lets get to the point. What can you do against this kind of headaches. Again, if have sudden head pain or for a long period of time, we encourage you to see a specialist. This blog doesn’t give medical advice. We just share common knowledge about physical problems.
Hydration is the best thing what to do against headaches
You need to drink enough. The rule of thumb is two liters a day, but this varies. If you do physical work, or you spend a lot of time in the sun, then you need to drink more. Water is the best way to hydrate. Be careful, many so-called energy drinks contain lots of sugar. Go with water or tea, and you’ll be fine.
If the pain comes from your neck or shoulder, then try to get some massage, You can go to a therapist or use one of those devices for massaging, like a massage chair. It will loosen your muscles and increase the blodd flow.
A great exercise when you are in the office. There are many ways to do that, I will talk about a few here:
- Lie down on your back with a towel roll behind your neck. Nod with your neck and head and hold the position for 10 seconds. Raise your arms on either side for the duration of the hold.
- Bring your chin to your chest slowly and hold for 30 seconds for a gentle stretch to the back of your neck.
- Stand or sit in an erect position as you turn your head to the right, looking over your shoulder. Hold the position for 30 seconds before returning to the original position. Repeat on the left side.
Yoga and Meditation
Both practice will help you to relax muscles and mind. There is a reason why we say “You give me headaches”. When we are angry or tense, our muscles will get tense too and this can result in headaches. Mediation is a good exercise when you want to know what to against headaches. It frees your mind. Yoga is related to meditation, but can be done alone as well
Have a long walk outside
And our final advice for what to do against headaches is to take a walk. When outside, you will breath more intense, yous body gets more oxygen and can relax a bit. Tension will go down, and you can stop owrroying about work for a few minutes.
